KHOROG, September 30, 2010, Asia-Plus  — A brick-making plant has been introduced into operation in Vanj district of Gorno Badakhshan.  It is the first enterprise of this kind launched in the region over the past 40 years.

The plant for producing ferroconcrete structures had been built in Khorog, the administrative center of the region in the 1970s already, but it had stopped operations in the early 1990s.

According to the Vanj district administration, the brick-making plant with capacity of producing more than 340,000 bricks per month was constructed due to funds of local entrepreneurs.  A total cost of the project is more than 8.3 million somoni.

“The plant will use local raw materials, and therefore, bricks produced in Vanj will cost half as much then those delivered to Gorno Badakhshan from other regions of the country,” the source said.

At present 20 local residents work for the plant at an average wage of 500 to 600 somoni.  Specialists from Sughd province have conducted vocational course for them, the source added.
