DUSHANBE, October 1, 2010, Asia-Plus  — We must do all that is in our power to stabilize the situation in the east of the country, Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament), remarked today, opening  the second session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the fourth convocation.

According to him, some political forces and extremist organizations having links with foreign countries are unhappy with peaceful and stable situation in Tajikistan.

“Today Central Asia became an arena of rivalry between geopolitical interests of some countries of the world and this impacts social and political life in the countries of the region,” Tajik speaker stressed.

In his speech, Zuhurov also extended condolences to families and friends of soldiers and officers that were killed in an ambush in Kamarob Gorge in Rasht district on September 19.

“I am sure that efforts taken by the country’s law enforcement and power-wielding authorities to stabilize the situation in the east of the country will yield positive results and criminals that committed this terrorist act will be punished,” the speaker said, noting that the majority of population of the eastern part of the country supports the government and the constitutional order of Tajikistan.

“We call on all young people, who joined the criminal groupings through inexperience, to lay down weapons and return to peaceful life,” Zuhurov stated.
