DUSHANBE, January 22, 2011, Asia-Plus  — Two terrorist acts have been prevented in Khujand as combat engineers have defused a bomb in a car and another car packed with explosives has been sunk in the Syrdarya River.

Two suspect cars were found abandoned outside the buildings of the Sughd police directorate and the State Committee for National Security (SCNS)’s office for Sughd in Khujand Friday night, at around 11:00 pm, the source at one of the Sughd law enforcement agencies told Asia-Plus Saturday morning.  According to him, both cars with forged transit number plates were packed with explosives.

“The combat engineers defused a bomb in Opel left outside the police directorate.  An explosive device equivalent in its capacity to 6 kilograms of TNT was in the car,” said the source.  “The combat engineers could not open doors of Volkswagen Passat left outside the SCNS’s office and it was decided to sink the car in the Syrdarya River.”

We will recall that a suicide bombing occurred in Khujand on September 3, 2010 as suicide bomber drove a car packed with explosives into the gate of the Sughd regional body empowered to combat organized crime.  Two persons were killed and at least 25 others were injured in that suicide attack.
