DUSHANBE, September 21, 2011, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon today extended condolences to his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai over the assassination in Kabul of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, the Tajik presidential press service reports.

In his message, President Rahmon, in particular, noted that Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani was one of the most distinguished persons in contemporary history of Afghanistan.  He also underlined the significant role of Professor Rabbani in seeking the best ways of strengthening peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Rahmon also offered his condolences to the people of Afghanistan.         

World leaders today condemned the assassination of former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, saying the attack will not deter them in working with Afghanistan on its path to security and prosperity.

Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was the chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council, was killed with several other people his house on September 20 by a suicide bomber who concealed explosives in his turban.
