DUSHANBE, December 10, Asia-Plus  — The corruption perception survey was presented in Dushanbe on December 9.

The survey was conducted by the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Tajikistan with support from the OSCE Office in Tajikistan.

1,000 people have been surveyed in Tajikistan’s six largest cities.

55 percent of those surveyed noted that the corruption level is high in the country, while 25 percent of respondents consider that the level of corruption in Tajikistan is medium.

59 percent of respondents consider that more corruption-related crimes are committed at the republican level of management, 10.6 percent of those surveyed noted that more corruption-related crimes are committed at the regional level and 27.7 percent of respondents consider that more corruption-related crimes are committed at the local level of management.  

55% of those surveyed consider that corruption has risen markedly in Tajikistan over the past five years.

Respondents noted that practically all forms of corruption are practiced in Tajikistan: bribery – 86 percent; power abuse – 78 percent; nepotism – 70 percent; and trading in influence – 62 percent.

General police, traffic police and public health are perceived to be the most corrupt institutions.  Nearly 84 percent of those polled consider that traffic police are the most corrupt public institution; 83 percent – general police; 80 percent – public health; and 71.6 percent – prosecutor’s offices.
