DUSHANBE, February 17, 2012, Asia-Plus — The next meeting of the Tajik-Uzbek Intergovernmental Commission for Demarcation and Delimitation is expected to take place in Dushanbe from February 20 to February 22.
According to the Uzbek Embassy in Dushanbe, an Uzbek delegation, led by the First Vice-Premier Rustam Azimov, will arrive in Dushanbe by train. The delegation consists of more than 25 representatives from ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan, the source said.
A well-informed source in the government of Tajikistan says the Commission is co-chaired by Tajik Security Council Secretary Abdurahim Qahhorov and Uzbek Vice-Premier Rustam Azimov.
To-date, some 80 percent of Tajikistan’s common border with Uzbekistan has reportedly been delineated. A total length of Tajik-Uzbek border is more than 1,200 kilometers.
Some experts consider that the crossing between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan is one of the worst frontier experiences in the Central Asian region. Uzbekistan has made it very difficult for any Tajik citizen to cross the frontier, parts of which are mined.
