DUSHANBE, October 8, 2013, Asia-Plus — Shukurjon Zuhurov, the speaker of Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament, is attending a meeting of the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly (PA) of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) that is being held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan today.
According to Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon, the meeting, presided over by Russia’s State Duma speaker Sergey Naryshkin, is discussing issues related to providing regional security and strengthening the Organization’s potential.
While in Bishkek, Tajik parliamentary speaker is scheduled to hold a number of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the CSTO member nations, Sultonov said.
Meanwhile, Belarusian news agency, BelTA, reports the CSTO PA Council meeting in Bishkek will focus on the situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The MPs will also discuss the cooperation between the CSTO PA and the statutory bodies of the organization in addressing the issues of international and regional security, the outcome of the September session of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. The lawmakers will discuss the measures for the implementation of the priority activities of the CSTO suggested by the Kyrgyz Republic for the period of its Chairmanship in the organization in 2013.
In addition, the meeting will review the results of the coordination meeting of the chairmen of the committees (commissions) for defense and security of the parliaments of the member states at the CSTO PA Council for 2012-2013, and the draft documents regulating the activities of the Parliamentary Assembly, and other issues.
