DUSHANBE, December 9, 2013, Asia-Plus – Russia’s String Quartet named after Tikhon Khrennikov is performing a concert in Dushanbe today evening.

Organized under support of the Russian Ministry of Culture and Rossotrudnichetvo’s office in Dushanbe, the concert is dedicated to the 100th birthday of known Russian and Soviet composer Tikhon Khrennikov, according to the Russian Center of Culture and Science in Dushanbe.

The concert is part of the quartet’s jubilee tour of the CIS nations, the source said.

Tikhon Khrennikov (June 10, 1913 – August 14, 2007) was a Russian and Soviet composer, pianist, leader of the Union of Soviet Composers, who was also known for his political activities.  He wrote three symphonies, four piano concertos, two violin concertos, two cello concertos, operas, operettas, ballets, chamber music, incidental music and film music.

Khrennikov was an active concert performer through his entire life, playing his piano concertos as well as his songs and other compositions.  He collaborated with the violinist Leonid Kogan and the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich who gave premieres of his cello concerto and two violin concertos.
