DUSHANBE, February 4, 2014, Asia-Plus – The Government of Japan supports improvement of health sector in Khatlon’s Baljuvon district within the framework of Grant Assistance for the Grass–roots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe says that Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi, Ambassador of Japan in the Republic of Tajikistan, and Mr. Foteh Aminov, Chairman of the Baljuvon District, signed a grant contract for “The Project for Construction of 2nd Building for Central Hospital in Baljuvon District” for the total amount of US$ 113,243 on February 3, 2014.

The Baljuvon central district hospital was built in 1973 and has always been considered as the main medical facility in the area.  However, it lacks medical diagnostic unit and equipment for examining and identifying diseases. In addition, the lack of space in the hospital makes it difficult for the doctors to provide proper healthcare services to the patients and hinders the hospital from having additional departments that are in high demand.

This project aims at constructing a new building, which will serve as a medical diagnostic unit and provide space for emergency treatment.  With the new medical facility with several additional departments, the capacity of Central Hospital to provide adequate and speedy medical treatment will increase, and over 10,000 patients are expected to have access to improved healthcare services annually.  Moreover, this new building will be equipped with advanced medical tools, which will be provided by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan. This will further enhance sustainability of the project.

Access to best possible medical care is essential to everyone. GGP’s mission is to ensure basic human security needs, in which access to quality medical treatment is a vital component.  The Government of Japan is committed to continuing its support to fulfill the needs of the people in Tajikistan.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and International NGOs in developing countries.  GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  As of today, GGP has supported 307 projects in Tajikistan, for which more than US$ 23.9 million has been provided since 1996.
