DUSHANBE, March 19, 2014, Asia-Plus — Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) in Tajikistan extends its support for 7 new distinct projects, which will have significant impact on the lives of people in each respective community.
According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi, Ambassador, Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, signed grant contracts for seven GGP projects on March 17.
“The Project for Construction of Secondary School in Guruldi Village, Kushkiya Jamoat, Temurmalik District” was signed with Mr. Mirzokhon Sangov, Chairperson of Temurmalik District, for the amount of US$113,210. This project will realize the construction of the much-needed school building. The importance of education and lack of schools in remote areas can be sometimes overlooked. Education is fundamental for the well-being of the society and will have long-lasting impact to children’s life.
“The Project for Support to Mechanical Demining Activities in Tajikistan” was signed with Mr. Jean-Jacques Maerel, Country Director of Swiss Foundation for Mine Action (FSD), for the amount of US$ 272,030. This project enables FSD to continue its mechanical demining operations in Tajikistan. The project aims to reduce human and livestock fatalities in land-mine contaminated areas, and bring the socio-economic development and stability to livelihood of the rural areas.
“The Project for Rehabilitation of Secondary School No.25 in Kirov Village, Zargar Jamoat, Bokhtar District” signed with Mr. Jabbor Samadov, Chairperson of Bokhtar District, for the amount of US$117,261, will rehabilitate the school’s building. Upon completion of the project, over 700 students will be able to learn in the improved learning environment.
“The Project for Construction of New School Building for School No.12 in Fathobod Village, Miskinobod Jamoat, Fayzobod District” signed with Mr. Imomnazar Karimiyon, Chairperson of Fayzobod District, for the amount of US$108,260, aims to improve the capacity of the school No.12 through construction of a new school building. Many children have long walking-distance to go to school outside Fathobod village every day. The new building could provide more children in and around Fathobod village with the opportunity to study together in a new school building.
“The Project for Disaster Risk Reduction in Dashtijum Village, Shouroobod District”, signed with Mr. Amirkhon Ikromov, Chairperson of Shouroobod District, with the total amount of US$ 119,483, aims at reducing the impact of flooding of Dashtijum Gully. By reinforcing the riverbanks and building a new bridge, safety level will greatly increase in Dashtijum Village, which has suffered from numerous floods in the past.
“The Project for Construction of Additional Building for Secondary School No.166 in Boloshahr Village, Guliston Jamoat, Roudaki District” signed with Mr. Saidmurod Taghoyev, Chairperson of Roudaki District, for US$113,879, will provide the school with a new building which could receive the increased number of students. School No.166 has been facing severe shortage of classrooms. Japan’s GGP takes highly of children’s will to study.
“The Project for Rehabilitation of Infectious Diseases Department of Regional Hospital in Obburdon Jamoat, Mastchoh District” signed with Mr. Mirzoahmad Ahmadzoda, Chairperson of Mastchoh District, with the total amount of US$113,745, will rehabilitate the old Infectious Diseases Department building, which is currently in an unusable condition. Through this project, the Infectious Diseases Department will be able to operate again in the rehabilitated facility.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and International NGOs in developing countries. GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. To-date, GGP has supported 320 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan, for which more than US$ 25.5 million has been provided since 1996.
