DUSHANBE, October 1, 2015, Asia-Plus – Senior representatives of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan on September 30 met here with representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) o discuss state and prospects of cooperation between Tajikistan and ADB on enhancement of the country’s transportation sector, according to the Ministry of Transport (MoT).

An official source at a MoT says the two sides discussed issues related to technical support provided by the Bank to Tajikistan for development of a private-public partnership (PPP) in the country’s transportation sector.

ADB is Tajikistan’s largest multilateral development partner, and plays an invaluable role in aligning the country’s aid with ongoing necessary reforms.

Tajikistan joined the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1998. ADB opened a resident mission in Dushanbe in 2003.  In the last 17 years, ADB used its financial resources and technical expertise to help improve the welfare of the Tajik people.  Its partnership with Tajikistan has promoted social development, restored or built new infrastructure, expanded agricultural production, and encouraged regional cooperation and trade within the framework of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program.

The ADB-supported programs have successfully helped improve people’s lives through better road connectivity and more reliable power supply.

As of December 31, 2014, ADB’s cumulative commitments to Tajikistan totaled around $1.3 billion comprising 23 loans for $373 million, 27 grants for $853 million, and 75 technical assistance grants for $51 million.  Around 83% of ADB’s portfolio is concentrated in three key sectors: energy (36%), transport (35%), and agriculture and natural resources (12%).

ADB has agreed to boost its assistance to Tajikistan by around $20 million in 2015, raising its full year planned assistance program to $79 million.

The 2015 assistance program is aimed at supporting development of the private sector, railways and water resources, and improvement of the investment climate.
