DUSHANBE, January 26, 2016, Asia-Plus — Minutes of Meetings of the Record of Discussions were signed on January 25, 2016 between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan for extension of the Technical Cooperation Project for Improvement of Road Maintenance in the Republic of Tajikistan that was planned to be completed in May, 2016, according to JICA Dushanbe Office.

The project was extended to six months (to November, 2016) with the purpose to expand the target area to include Sughd and Kulob State Enterprises on Transport Management (SETM) in addition to previously covered Qurghon Teppa and Hisor SETMs.  Provision of road maintenance equipment is being considered to Sughd and Kulob SETMs by the Government of Japan and the preparatory survey was completed in November 2015.  In this regard, the extension of the technical cooperation and its expansion to cover Sughd and Kulob SETMs would contribute to enhancing technical sustainability in terms of dissemination of transferred knowledge and technique.

The Resident Representative of JICA in Tajikistan Mr. Ishii Kiyoshi noted that JICA”s cooperation in the field of transport has been one of its core programs in Tajikistan through which the Government of Japan is extending wide and systematic assistance in the road sector.  The given project will further improve the capacity of above-mentioned SETMs in terms of road inspection and road repairing.

Tajik Minister of Transport Ganjalzoda appreciated JICA’s support for development of Tajikistan’s transport sector and noted that the Technical Cooperation Project for Improvement of Road Maintenance in Tajikistan is one of the important components of the cooperation with JICA.

JICA began its cooperation with Tajikistan in 1993 by offering 21 seats for officials in Tajikistan to study in Japan.  Total number of participants in training Tajik officials in Japan is more than 1500 people from early 1993 until April 2015.  In 2006 JICA Office was opened in Dushanbe.  In Tajikistan, JICA focuses mainly on the following areas: transportation, energy, health, agriculture, water and capacity building.
