DUSHANBE, February 26, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajik Minister of Finance Abdusalom Qurboniyon yesterday met here with representatives of the Saudi Fund for Development (SDF), Abdullah al-Khuwaiter and Sulayman al-Wetayd, according to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) Secretariat.

During the meeting, Tajik minister appreciated the SDF’s support for implementation of a number of vital economic development projects in Tajikistan.

The sides reportedly exchanged views on priorities of cooperation between Tajikistan and the SDF.

On the same day, the SDF representatives met with Suhrob Mirzoyev, First Deputy Minister of Transport of Tajikistan.

According to the Ministry of Transport (MoT) press center, the SDF representatives noted that they had discussed the issues of financing rehabilitation of roads and bridges in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), which had been damaged by last year’s natural disasters.

In the course of the talks, they also discussed a number of transport sector enhancement projects developed by a MoT.

“The SDF representatives showed interest in projects aimed at rehabilitation of roads and bridges in Gorno Badakhshan and proposed to discuss the issues of the financing of the projects in the future,” the MoT press center said.

The Saudi Fund for Development has been financing a number of projects in the transport sector, including the construction of the Kulob-Qalai Khumb road.

The Saudi Fund for Development is a Saudi government agency that channels bilateral aid to developing countries, predominantly through grants and soft loans.  Established by royal decree in 1974, the Fund began operations in 1975.  Loans often support infrastructure development, such as road and dam construction, construction or rehabilitation of hospitals and health clinics, and the expansion of water and sanitation services; they also support work in education, housing and urban development, the energy sector, and education.
