Tajik leader holds a number of bilateral meetings on sidelines of BRICS summit in Xiamen

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has held a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 2017 2017 BRICS summit in Xiamen, China.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, Rahmon held meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma, Brazilian President Michel Temer, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha.  

President Rahmon and Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha reportedly discussed issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Thailand.  Both sides expressed satisfaction with the current level of cooperation between their countries. 

They reportedly outlined sectors like trade, investment, education, and tourism, as areas, which could drive the bilateral trade between the two countries.

Rahmon and Prayuth Chan-ocha confirmed their readiness to establish the Tajikistan-Thailand commission for economic and trade cooperation, open embassies in the capital cities of Tajikistan and Thailand, and launch direct air communication.  

Emomali Rahmon invited Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to pay an official visit to Tajikistan.  

The president’s website did not give any details of Rahmon’s meetings with other participants of the 2017 BRICS summit.  

While in Xiamen, Tajik leader also held talks with Zichin Mining Group Co. president, Mr. Chen Jinghe.

They reportedly discussed prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the Chinese gold mining company.  

The 2017 BRICS summit is the ninth annual BRICS summit, an international relations conference attended by the heads of state or heads of government of the five member states Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.  The summit was held in Xiamen, China, the second time the China has hosted the summit after the 2011 summit.
