Dushanbe authorities have decided to demolish one of Dushanbe’s wholesale markets — Shanghai Bazar, better known as Khitoi (Chinese) Bazaar. Merchants should leave the market territory until the end of the week.

Merchants running shops at the Shanghai Bazaar say representatives of the Dushanbe mayor’s office came to the market three days ago and said that the Shanghai Bazaar will be demolished.

One of director deputies, who wanted to remain unnamed, said that the administration is making preparations for closing the market.

“We are still at a loss.  A new shopping street was built just a month ago and here this bad news comes like a bolt from the blue.  Some 500 merchants have been running their shops at our market,” he added.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Dushanbe mayor’s office say the market will be demolished in the near future.   “The merchants have been offered shops at the Korvon wholesale market,” they said.

Recall, Dushanbe’s Shohmansour Bazaar, locally known as Zeleyony Bazar (Green Bazaar), was demolished in October and merchants moved to the Mehrgon Bazaar (formerly Poytakht-90).

The Poytakht-90 Shopping Complex was opened in September 2014.  The Dushanbe budget allocated 202.6 million somoni (equivalent to some 40 million U.S. dollars) for construction of that complex.
