Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have reopened bus links connecting their cities and towns after the 26-year interruption.

The first shuttle bus with passengers on board arrived in the Tajik northern city of Khujand from the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, yesterday afternoon.

The total length of the road from Khujand to Tashkent is 174 kilometers and a ticket for this route costs 50.00 somoni.

Recall an agreement on reopening bus links between the large cities of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan was signed in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, last month.  The document was inked by senior representatives of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan’s Auto Transport Agency.

In all, twelve regular bus routes are expected to be launched to the Uzbek cities of Tashkent, Samarqand Bukhara, Ferghana, Denau, Kokand, Andijan and Termez.

This has reportedly become possible due to a government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on international highway service that was signed in Dushanbe on March 9 during Uzbek president’s state visit to Tajikistan.
