The Asia Development Bank (ADB) is expected to provide 41 million US dollars on a grant basis in the near future to support enhancement of Dushanbe water supply, according to the Dushanbe mayor’s office.

An official source at the Dushanbe mayor’s office says this issue has been discussed here at a meeting of the Deputy Dushanbe Mayor, Mahmadsaid Zuvaydzoda, with Ms. Ramola Naik Singru, Senior Urban Development Specialist, ADB Central and West Asia Department.

In the course of the talks, the two reportedly discussed issues related to providing technical assistance within the framework of the Dushanbe Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project.

This project is the first one in the urban sector of Tajikistan to finance rehabilitation of the water supply and sewerage facilities.  The project is expected to raise the level of resilience to climate change impacts and strengthen institutional capacity of the Sate Unitary Enterprise (SUE) Dushanbevodokanal (DVK – Dushanbe municipal waterworks).

The project has reportedly been developed under technical assistance of the Asian Development Bank.  A total cost of the project is 41 million US. Dollars and this amount will be provided by the ABD on a grant basis, the source added.

According to the ADB, the Transaction TA (TRTA) grant has helped the government to prepare the project scope, institutional and capacity development needs, and conduct due diligence for the technical, financial, economic, social, and environmental viability of the proposed investment project.  The TRTA is estimated to cost $650,000 which will be financed on a grant basis by ADB's Technical Assistance Special Fund (TASF-VI), and 1% of the total TRTA cost will be financed by the Government of Tajikistan for in-kind contribution.  Parallel financing of $500,000 on a grant basis by Cities Development Initiative for Asia has been approved to prepare the Project Preparation Study for the technical feasibility and preliminary engineering design of the project.

ADB is celebrating 20 years of development partnership with Tajikistan this year.  To date, ADB has approved around $1.6 billion in concessional loans, grants, and technical assistance to the country. ADB and Tajikistan’s development partnership, which began in 1998, has restored and built the country’s new transport and energy infrastructure, supported social development, expanded agricultural production, and improved regional cooperation and trade.
