Japan’s government completes two GGP projects in Khatlon province

Mr. Akiyuki Tsutsui, the Head of the Economic Cooperation Department of Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, visited Khatlon province from October 15 to October 18 and attended the successful completion of two projects implemented by the Government of Japan under the scheme of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

According to Japan’s Embassy, during the ceremonies, the representatives of each organization commemorated the successful completion of the projects the total budget of which amounted to U.S.$179,900.

The handover ceremony for “The Project for Construction of Women’s Center in Levakand City” was held on October 15 in presence of Ms. Sanavbar Samizoda, mayor of Levakand city, along with representatives and employees of the women center.  The local government of Levakand city reportedly received gratuitous assistance; a grant amounted to U.S.$90,130 for construction of women’s center and procurement of equipment. Upon the project realization, the center enables to provide professional courses, psychological assistance and legal consultation for local women.

The next day Mr. Tsutsui together with Mr. Emomiddin Aslzoda, chairman of Temurmalik district, joined the handover ceremony for “The Project for Provision of Excavator for River Bank Reinforcement in Temurmalik District”.  The local executive authority was reportedly granted with U.S.$89,770 to acquire an excavator for strengthening the banks of Surkhob River of the aforementioned district.

During his speech at the handover ceremony, Mr. Tsutsui emphasized the substantial role of the GGP projects in making the best changes, creating better conditions as well as providing support and enabling environment in making positive contribution for the people of Tajikistan at grassroots level. In addition, he expressed that these projects contribute to the friendship and further expansion of bilateral relationship between the Republic of Tajikistan and Japan.  The local authorities and residents of the districts expressed their sincere gratitude for the continuous support and contribution of people of Japan for development of Tajikistan.

“Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project” (GGP) is a scheme within Japan’s Official Development Assistance. GGP in particular implements grassroots-level projects in various sectors throughout the Republic of Tajikistan. Recipients of GGP grants include local governments, educational and medical institutions, and NGOs. As of today, GGP has supported 389 projects in Tajikistan, for which U.S.$31.5 million has been allocated since 1996.
