Newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Islamic Republic of Iran, Nizomiddin Zohidi, presented a copy of his credentials to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on May 4.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the two sides exchanged views on state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran.

Iranian foreign minister reportedly congratulated Tajik diplomat on the beginning of his activities in Tehran and wished him success.

Nizomiddin Zohidi, who had previously served as Frist Deputy Foreign Minister of Tajikistan, was appointed Tajikistan’s Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran on April 10, replacing Nematullo Usmonzoda, who was relieved of the post of Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Iran in February this year.

Recall, Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin told reporters in Dushanbe on February 12 that Tajikistan is taking efforts to improve its relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“Iran was the first country to recognize Tajikistan’s independence in 1991 and opened its embassy in Dushanbe in 1992.  No one can deny historical and cultural commonality between our countries.  We had good relations with Iran before the events of September 4, 2015,” the minister said, meaning two attacks in and around Dushanbe linked to the ex-deputy foreign minister Abduhalim Nazarzoda.

According to him, the events of September 4, 2015 have shown that some “economic and financial structures of Iran support the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan, which, in turn, supported the riot raised by Nazarzoda.

“We are discussing this issue with Iran but this problem has not yet been resolved.  Therefore, one can say that Tajikistan and Iran have problems only on political issues.  But this problem is not so serious,” Muhriddin said.

He further noted that Iranian companies have been participating in construction of the Roghun hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in Tajikistan.

“Tajikistan and Iran have many joint projects, including Sangtuda-2 HPP, Istiqlol Tunnel and others,” the minister said.

New Iran’s Ambassador to Tajikistan, Mohammad Taghi Saberi, noted in early March in Tehran during his meeting with the top Iranian legislator Ali Larijani that Tajikistan is a strategic country for expanding fully-fledged cooperation with Iran and promised to use all the potentials to develop bilateral relations in all areas.
