In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Mirzo Ismoilzoda, the head of Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national integrated power company), noted on February 12 that Tajikistan will supply about 1.6 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan this year.

According to him, they plan to earn about 70 million U.S. dollars from the supply of electric power to Afghanistan this year.

“We have already reached an agreement with Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (national power utility) on supplying 1.588 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan this year,” Ismoilzoda said, noting that the price for one kWh of electric power supplied to Afghanistan rises 3 percent every year.

Last year, Tajikistan reportedly supplied 1.458.2 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan at the rate of 4.3 cents per one kWh.

Meanwhile, Tajikistan has not yet reached an agreement on supply of electric power to neighboring Uzbekistan this year.

“Negotiations are still under way, and the agreement will be concluded most likely during the first quarter of this year at a meeting of the Tajik-Uzbek commission for trade and economic cooperation,” Barqi Tojik top manager said.

He further noted that Tajikistan last year supplied 1.425.1 billion kWh of electricity to Uzbekistan at the rate of 2.0 cents per one kWh.

According to data from Barqi Tojik, electricity generation cost in Tajikistan is 28 dirams (equivalent to 2.8 cents) and the current price of one kWh of electricity for residential customers in Tajikistan is 22.66 dirams (equivalent to 2.3 cents).

Ismoilzoda noted that Tajikistan supplied electricity to Uzbekistan at preferential price because Uzbekistan supplied natural gas to Tajikistan at preferential price.

In accordance with the reached agreements, Tajikistan reportedly supplies electricity to neighboring countries only during the April-October period.

Tajikistan has sufficient summer-time (defined as May 1 to September 30) hydropower surpluses to export to the neighboring countries.
