On Wednesday February 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a telegram to Tajik President Emomali Rahmon expressing gratitude for condolences and assistance to the Chinese people, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

President Xi reportedly expressed sincere gratitude to the Tajik side for the words of support in connection with China’s fight against pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus infection.

Chinese leader, in particular, noted that China attaches significant importance to its bilateral cooperation with Tajikistan and “I am ready to continue to maintain close contacts with you for the purpose of continuing to strengthen bilateral relations for the benefit of our countries and peoples,” the telegram said.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the People’s Republic of China were established on January 4, 1992, shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

China’s Embassy was established in Dushanbe on March 13, 1992 and the Embassy of Tajikistan has functioned in Beijing since April 7, 1997.

The legal foundation of cooperation between the two friendly neighboring countries includes more than 200 interstate and intergovernmental agreements.

In 2011, China and Tajikistan signed a historic mutual agreement settling a century-old border dispute, with Tajikistan ceding 1158 square kilometers of territory to China, representing 5.5% of the land that Beijing had sought.  China also relinquished claims to over 28,000 km2 of Tajikistan territory.

With the signing of the Joint Declaration between the Republic of Tajikistan and the People’s Republic of China on establishing a strategic partnership in the threshold of the third decade of diplomatic relations a new page in bilateral cooperation between the two countries has opened.  Today, China is strategic partner of Tajikistan.

Tajikistan and China are active members of the regional and international organizations and closely cooperate within the framework of these organizations, particularly the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

China firmly supports Tajikistan's efforts to preserve national security and stability, and also helps Tajikistan in economic development.
