Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin began a two-day official visit to Moscow today, according to the Tajik MFA information department.

The visit is expected to result in signing of a program for cooperation between the foreign ministers of the two countries this year.

Meanwhile, a statement released by the Russian MFA notes that Tajikistan is a strategic partner of the Russian Federation in the Central Asian region.

In the course of the talks, the two ministers are reportedly expected to discuss state and prospect of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Moscow and Dushanbe in political, economic, and humanitarian spheres.

They will also exchange views on cooperation between the two countries in the framework of the CIS, the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the statement says, noting that the Russian Federation is major economic partner of Tajikistan and one of Tajikistan’s largest investors.

The Protocol on establishment of diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and the Russian Federation  was signed in Dushanbe on April 8, 1992.  The Embassy of the Russian Federation was opened in Dushanbe on May 4, 1992.

The Embassy of Tajikistan was opened in Moscow on December 18, 1993.

On May 25, 1993, the two countries signed an Agreement on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.  The legal foundation of the bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia includes more than 230 documents.

Both countries are close allies and members of the CIS, CSTO, and SCO.  Tajikistan hosts Russian military units and infrastructure in Central Asia.  Tajikistan and Russia also work closely together in issues concerning Afghanistan and are partners in anti-terrorism, anti-narcotics, and intelligence operations.
