Over the first three months of this year, Tajikistan has supplied more than US$6.8 million worth of electricity to neighboring countries, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.

Over the report period, the share of electricity in Tajikistan’s exports has amounted 3.3 percent.

Tajikistan supplies electricity mainly to Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

According to some sources, Tajikistan supplies electric power to Uzbekistan at the rate of 2 cents per one kWh in summer period and at the rate of 2.5 cents in winter period.

At the same time, the price for one kWh of electric power supplied to Afghanistan rises 3.0 percent every year.

Last year, Tajikistan reportedly supplied 1.458.2 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan at the rate of 4.3 cents per one kWh.

This year, Tajikistan hopes to earn about 70 million USD from the supply of electricity to Afghanistan.

Mirzo Ismoilzoda, the head of Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national integrated power company), told reporters in Dushanbe on February 12 that Tajikistan will supply about 1.6 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan this year.

“We have already reached an agreement with Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (national power utility) on supplying 1.588 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan this year,” Ismoilzoda said,

Meanwhile, power outages have begun in rural areas of Sughd and Khatlon provinces as well as districts subordinate to the center.  Residents of a number of districts say they have no electricity from 8:00 am to 5:00pm and then from midnight to morning.

Authorities, however, say no power rationing has been launched in the country.  Officials from local power supply networks say they periodically cut off electricity in order to carry out preventive maintenance on electrical substations and power transmission lines.

Tajikistan reportedly exports surplus electricity to Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan mainly during the spring-summer period.  This year, Tajikistan is expected to supply about 3.5 billion kWh of electricity to the neighboring countries.

Tajikistan has sufficient summer-time (defined as May 1 to September 30) hydropower surpluses to export to the neighboring countries.  Tajikistan is reportedly able to export up to 5 billion kWh of electricity during the summer period.
