This year, the northern district of Mastchoh (Sughd province) will host official celebratory events dedicated to the 23rd anniversary of the peace accord ending the civil war in the country.

President Emomali Rahmon will attend the celebratory events that will be marked on June 27, an official source within the Tajik government told Asia-Plus in an interview.

While in Mastchoh, Emomali Rahmon will inaugurate a new Palace of Culture in the district.

This Place of Culture having 1,000 will be the country’s largest Palace of Culture, the source said.

According to him, more than 30 million somoni have been sent for construction of this Palace of Culture.

In all, some 30 new social and economic facilities, including a 10,000-seat stadium, are expected to be commissioned in the Mastchoh district on June 27.

Some 11 million somoni have reportedly been spent for construction of the new stadium in the district.

The head of state will also hold a meeting with regional administrators of the Sughd province in Buston, the administrative center of the Mastchoh district.

Last year, the Rasht district (eastern Tajikistan) hosted official celebrations dedicated to the 22nd anniversary of the peace accord.

On June 27, 1997, the confronting sides signed in Moscow the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan.  For the purposes of achieving peace and national accord in Tajikistan and overcoming the consequences of the civil war, inter-Tajik talks on national reconciliation were conducted from April 1994 to 1997 under the auspices of the United Nations.

Protocols that were agreed and signed in the course of eight rounds of talks between delegations of the Government of Tajikistan and the United Tajik Opposition (UTO), six meetings between the President of Tajikistan and the UTO leader, and also three rounds of consultations between the delegations of the sides in Almaty, Ashgabat, Bishkek, Islamabad, Kabul, Mashhad (Iran), Moscow, Tehran and Khusdeh (Afghanistan) constituted the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan.
