The Government of Tajikistan expects to receive some 70 million U.S. dollars (USD) in grants from international financial institutions to support the country’s economy.

An enlarged meeting of the management of the National bank of Tajikistan (NBT), presided over by the NBT first deputy head, Jamoliddin Nouraliyev, took place on July 16.

NBT deputy heads Hokim Kholiqzoda, Hamidullo Mashrabzoda and Mahinbonou Nakhatzoda also attended the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Nouraliyev, in particular, noted that despite impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and external factors, Tajik central bank had implemented a balanced monetary and currency policy over the first six months of this year.

The country’s gross domestic product over the first six months of this year had reportedly amounted to 32.4 billion somoni (3.5-percent increase).

The country’s loan portfolio reportedly increased 9.5 percent or 852 million somoni in a year to June 30, 2020, reaching 9.8 billion somoni.

To support the country’s economy under difficult conditions of the global economy, Tajik authorities have reportedly attracted 300.8 million USD from international financial institutions, including 189.5 million USD attracted through the International Monetary Fund (IMF), 50 million USD through the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and 50 million USD through the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), according to the NBT press center.

Tajikistan also plans to attract 52.2 million USD from ADB and 16 million USD from the Word Bank in the future, which is quite important for development of the country’ economy and its banking system.

As a result of negotiations conducted in the framework of cooperation between the NBT and international financial institutions, IMF over the same six-month period has written off 11 million USD of NBT’s debt, Tajik central bank’s press center says.

As of June 30, 2020, 73 lending agencies, including 17 traditional banks, 1 Islamic bank, 20 microloan deposit-taking organizations, six microloan organizations, and 29 micro-lending funds, operate in country, according to Tajik central bank.
