44 new officially confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) were reported in Tajikistan yesterday, bringing a total number of officially confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country to 7,320 as of the night of July 29, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population (MoHSPP) said.
6,103 (83.3 percent) COVID-19 patients have reportedly recovered as of the night of July 28, 2020.
According to a MoHSPP, 60 officially confirmed COVID-19-linked deaths () have been reported in the country as of the night of July 28.
96 people hospitalized on suspicion of contracting the novel coronavirus are under the supervision of doctors, the ministry said.
1,121 people in Tajikistan have reportedly been treating COVID-19 at home under supervision of family doctors.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Tajikistan is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have spread to Tajikistan when its index cases, in Dushanbe and Khujand, were confirmed on April 30, 2020.
Meanwhile, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the global death toll from the novel coronavirus has been reported at 667,011 as of the morning of July 30, with 17 million infections confirmed, causing mass disruptions as governments continue to try to slow the spread of the respiratory illness.
As far as Central Asia is concerned, Kazakh President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev on July 29 ordered an extension of a nationwide lockdown by another two weeks to stem the outbreak of the coronavirus. Kazakh health authorities said on July 29 that the number of coronavirus cases in the country was 86,192, with 54,404 patients recovered and 793 died.
According to Kyrgyz health authorities, the number of coronavirus cases in the country has reached 34,592, including 1,347 deaths.
In Uzbekistan, health officials said on July 29 that 22,196 coronavirus cases, including 127 deaths, had been registered in the country.
Turkmenistan is the only country in the Central Asian region that has not officially registered any coronavirus cases, but RFE/RL correspondents have reported that local hospitals have been overwhelmed with patients with pneumonia symptoms, some of whom, including medical personnel, have died.
