Russia has sets a grain export quota for the period from February 15, 2021 to July 1, 2021.
According to the Russian government’s resolution, the quota does not apply to the member nations of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the supply of humanitarian aid abroad.
The document is adopted as part of the government package of measures against the rise in prices for food products.
Russia will increase the size of its grain export quota planned for Feb. 15-June 30 to 17.5 million tons from 15 million tons.
Russia, one of the world’s largest wheat exporters, reportedly imposes the quota to stabilise its domestic market after recent price rises despite a large crop harvested this year.
The quota will be distributed among exporters based on their share of July-December grain exports.
Meanwhile, the idea of imposing an export tariff has not found much support in the Ministry of Agriculture. It reportedly said last month that the export tariff could affect farmers.
Imposition by Russia of grain export quota will not affect Tajikistan as Russia accounts for not more than 5 percent of Tajikistan’s wheat imports.
Kazakhstan provides the bulk of Tajikistan’s wheat and flour imports. In January-November this year, Kazakhstan has accounted for more than 90 percent of Tajikistan’s wheat imports.
According to official statistical data, Tajikistan over the same-eleven month period has imported 875,000 tons of wheat, which was 8.8 percent fewer than in the same period last year.
In January-November this year, Tajikistan imported 87,000 tons of wheat flour, which was 18 percent more than in the same period last year.
Tajikistan’s annual requirements in wheat flour are more than 1 million tons.
According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, the price for grade I wheat flour has risen 20.6 percent in Tajikistan this year.
