The fourth session of bilateral politician consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France was held on January 12 via a videoconferencing platform.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the delegation of Tajikistan was headed by the Acting Head of Department for European and American Countries, Mr. Firdavs Usmonov, and the France delegation was led by Deputy Head of the Department of Continental Europe, Mr. Sylvain Guiague.

In the course of the talks, the parties reportedly discussed a wide range of issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and France in the fields of politics, economics, environment, health, education, culture, tourism, water and energy as well as combating extremism and terrorism were discussed.

They also exchanged views on the issues of combating COVID-19, addressing modern challenges and threats, and expanding collaboration in the framework of international and regional organizations.

According to data from the State Committee on Investment and State-owned Property of Tajikistan, an investment forum of Tajikistan and France is expected to take place in Paris this year.

Besides, a delegation of French investors is expected to arrive in Dushanbe this year to study the investment opportunities here.  

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the French Republic were established on March 3, 1992.

An agreement of December 8, 2001 enabled the deployment at Dushanbe airport of an air detachment to support France’s operations in Afghanistan. This detachment, the Détair, officially left Dushanbe in late October 2014.  French diplomatic office became a fully-fledged Embassy following Tajik President Rahmon’s visit to Paris in December 2002.  Tajikistan opened an Embassy in Paris in September 2013.

Since 2016, political dialogue between the two countries has been structured around bilateral political consultations between foreign ministries.

Tajikistan is the first country in the Central Asian region with which France has signed an internal security cooperation agreement, in relation to EU and OSCE programs.

The legal foundation of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and France includes 22 documents.
