A convoy consisting of 28 trucks with humanitarian aid for residents of border areas affected by the recent unrest along the disputed segment of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border has arrived in Isfara, the press center of the Sughd governor’s office reported on May 11.

The humanitarian aid that has reportedly been collected by residents of the Tajik northern city of Konibodom will be distributed among residents of Somoniyon and Khojai Alo villages in Chorkuh jamoat and Vorukh jamoat.

The assistance reportedly includes building materials, clothes, shoes, carpets, bedding, household items, kitchen utensils, textbooks and stationery as well as food products.

Recall, the clashes broke out along the border between Tajikistan's Sughd province and Kyrgyzstan's southern Batken region on April 28 because of a dispute over a water distribution facility, which both countries claim as their own.

Villagers from opposing sides hurled rocks at each other and border guards joined the fray with assault rifles, machine guns and mortars on April 29.  The countries have agreed a complete ceasefire after the worst violence in decades along the Tajik-Kyrgyz border that killed 55 people and wounded more than 300 other people.

According to data made available by a special commission, 55 residential buildings have been damaged in border areas of Isfara district during the April 28-29 clashes on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border, 17 of them have been destroyed completely.

Almost half of the 970-kilometer-long Tajikistan’s common border with Kyrgyzstan has not been demarcated, leading to tensions over the past 30 years.
