On Friday May 21, Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin met here with Ambassador Peter Burian, the European Union (EU) Special Representative for Central Asia.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the parties discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation within the framework of European Union and Central Asia, the New EU Strategy for the region and Europe’s programs in Tajikistan.

The two noted the importance of developing relations between the European Union and Tajikistan in the formats of Cooperation Council, Cooperation Committee, as well as political and security and human rights dialogues.

Muhriddin and Burian also exchanged views on the issues related to providing security and stability in the region, situation in Afghanistan and threats of terrorism and extremism, Tajik MFA information department said.

The EU Special Representative (EUSR)’s mandate is based on the EU’s policy objectives in Central Asia.

These objectives include: promoting good and close relations between countries of Central Asia and the European Union on the basis of common values and interests as set out in relevant agreements; contributing to strengthening the stability and cooperation between the countries of the region; contributing to strengthening of democracy, rule of law, good governance and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Central Asia; addressing key threats, especially specific problems with direct implications for Europe; an enhancing the EU’s effectiveness and visibility in the region, including through a closer coordination with other relevant partners and international organizations, such as the OSCE.
