Co-chaired by the Tajik Minister of Economic Development and Trade Zavqi Zavqizoda, and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Trade Policy and Negotiations Matt Murray, the economic and energy part of the regular political consultations between Tajikistan and the United States took place in Washington on July 1.

The parties discussed issues related to using the opportunities of bilateral trade and investment, regional integration, climate change and the environment protection, as well as the COVID-19 coronavirus and health protection, according to the press center of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MoEDT).

The parties reportedly agreed to use the extensive trade, economic and investment opportunities of the United States for the economic and investment interests of Tajikistan in the areas of mobilizing additional financial and technical support, including through USAID and the US EXIM Bank, developing and implementing investment projects in the field of green energy, preventing climate change and environmental protection, improving access to safe drinking water, protecting intellectual property rights, preventing and reducing the spread of the COVID-19 infection, protecting the health and social well-being of the population, as well as eliminating existing barriers.

The Tajik side reportedly outline sectors like energy, mining, transportation, construction, production of building materials, light and food industries, agriculture, as well as tourism and banking as areas, which would drive the bilateral trade between the two countries.

It was also noted that USAID will provide a total of US$46.5 million worth of assistance to Tajikistan this year.

The Tajik side has asked for help from the United States in providing the country with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, the MoEDT press center said.

At the end of the meeting, the parties reportedly vowed to boost trade and economic cooperation.
