Tajikistan and Uzbekistan power utility companies have signed an agreement on the delivery of Tajik electricity to Uzbekistan during the spring-summer period this year, Mahmadumar Asozoda, the head of Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national power utility company), told reporters in Dushanbe on February 14.

According to him, Tajikistan will supply 1.4 billion kWh of electricity to Uzbekistan this year at the rate of 2.0 cents per 1 kWh.

As far as the low rate is concerned, the price for electricity supplied to Uzbekistan is tied to the price of natural gas supplied by Uzbekistan to Tajikistan for the Dushanbe natural gas powered combined heat and power (CHP) plant.  Uzbekistan reportedly supplies natural has for this CHP plant for relatively low prices.

Besides, Tajikistan will supply 1.5 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan at the rate of 4.65 cents per 1 kWh.

Tajikistan now supplies electricity to Uzbekistan and northeast provinces of Afghanistan within the framework of contracts concluded with power utility companies of these countries.

Tajikistan has sufficient summer-time (defined as May 1 to September 30) hydropower surpluses to export to the neighboring countries.
