Tajik, Russian leaders hold phone talks to discuss cooperation

On Friday May 13, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon had a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the parties discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan and the current situation along Tajikistan’s common border with Afghanistan.

Rahmon and Putin reportedly pointed out the significance of further expansion of security cooperation between their countries.   

The two leaders also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues being of mutual interest.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin says the phone talks were held at the initiative of Tajikistani side.  

The presidents reportedly exchanged views on developments in Afghanistan, primarily in terms of the recently increased activity of terrorist groups in Afghan territory.  It was confirmed that the relevant agencies of Russia and Tajikistan would continue to cooperate to ensure security along the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border.

Coordination within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) was also addressed, including in the context of the upcoming meeting of leaders of the CSTO member states to be held in Moscow on May 16.
