A scientific-practical conference entitled “Tajik Peace Experience and Ensuring Political Stability in the Modern World” too place in Sughd province’s capital, Khujand, on June 22.

Sughd governor Rajabboy Ahmadzoda participated in the conference that took place at Khujand State University, according to the Sughd regional administration.

The conference participants reportedly suggested bestowing President Emomali Rahmon with honorific of “Hero of Tajikistan” for the second time.

An appeal submitted to the Majlis Oli (Tajik Parliament), in particular, says, “Taking into account outstanding efforts of the Founder of Peace and National Accord, Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon to restore constitutional order, build new state system and his great role in building independent, democratic, rule-of-law and secular state, achieving peace and national accord, implementing strategic goals of the country and ensuring unity of the independent Tajikistan, we ask bestowing esteemed Emomali Rahmon with the highest title of “Hero of Tajikistan” for the second time.”

It is not the first time public activists suggest bestowing Emomali Rahmon with honorific of “Hero of Tajikistan.”

In 2019, youth activists from Kulob and Tursunzoda applied to the parliament and the government asking to bestow Emomali Rahmon with title of “Hero of Tajikistan” for the second time.

In 2016, Tajik veteran politician Hikmatullo Nasriddinov has suggested naming the Roghun hydroelectric power plant (HPP).

In 2015, Hikmatullo Nasriddinov suggested erecting a statue to Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe bestowing the president with the honorific of “Hero of Tajikistan” for the second time.

Rahmon was hailed by Nasriddinov, for his role in leading Tajikistan out of the brutal civil war of the 1990s.

“In that distant Fall of 1992, when the historic 16th session of the Supreme Council of Tajikistan was being held in Khujand, I noticed in my capacity as a deputy that many experienced politicians did not at that time want to take the leadership of the country into their hands,” Nasriddinov told Asia-Plus in an interview.  “Rahmon agreed to take on this heavy burden of the country’s leadership, saying at the time: ‘I will bring Tajikistan peace and reconciliation.’”

Hikmatullo Nasriddinov went a step further and suggested that Rahmon be put forward for the Nobel Peace Prize.  Tajikistan’s president was certainly more deserving of the prize than US President Barack Obama, Nasriddinov argued.

Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for his “effort to strengthen international diplomacy” in 2009, just nine months into his presidency.
