On the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Georgia, an official opening ceremony of ceremony of the Office of Tajikistan’s Honorary Consul, Mr. Tengiz Kokoladze, took place in Batumi on August 5, according to the Tajik MFA information department.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Tajik Ambassador noted that opening of the Honorary Consulate is an important event in the bilateral relationships between Tajikistan and Georgia and is evidence of the high level of relations between the two countriesю

It was also noted that opening of the Honorary Consulate  will make a significant contribution to further expansion of economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.

Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Mr. Tornike Rijvadze, for his part, expressed gratitude to Tajikistan for the decision to open the Honorary Consulate in Batumi.  He noted that it was an important step towards further expansion the bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Some consuls are not career officials of the represented state.  They may be local people with the nationality of the sending country, and in smaller cities, or in cities that are very distant from full-time diplomatic missions, a foreign government which feels that some form of representation is nevertheless desirable may appoint a person who has not hitherto been part of their diplomatic service to fulfill this role.  Such a consul may well combine the job with their own (often commercial) private activities, and in some instances may not even be a citizen of the sending country.  Such consular appointments are usually given the title of honorary consul or consul ad honorem.

Batumi is the second largest city of Georgia and the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.  It is situated in a subtropical zone at the foot of the Caucasus.  Much of Batumi's economy revolves around tourism and gambling (it is nicknamed "The Las Vegas of the Black Sea"), but the city is also an important seaport and includes industries like shipbuilding, food processing and light manufacturing.  Since 2010, Batumi has been transformed by the construction of modern high-rise buildings, as well as the restoration of classical 19th-century edifices lining its historic Old Tow

Adjara or Achara, officially known as the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, is a political-administrative region of Georgia.  Located in the country's southwestern corner, Adjara lies on the coast of the Black Sea near the foot of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, north of Turkey.  It is an important tourist destination.
