The import of almost all essential goods and products into Tajikistan last year dropped significantly.

Thus, according to data from the Agency for Statistics under the Government of Tajikistan, flour imports in January amounted to only 2,700 tons worth US$865,000, which is 24.5 percent less in weight terms and 10.6 percent less in value terms compared to January last year.

Last month, Tajikistan reported imported US$20.6 million worth of 66,200 tons of wheat flour, which was 18 percent less in weight terms and 12.7 percent less in value terms compared to January last year.

In January this year, Tajikistan imported 55,500 tons of petroleum products worth US$45.3 million.

Compared to January last year, petroleum product imports in January this year decreased by 2.1 percent in weight terms but increased by 0.7 percent in value terms.  The latter is explained by the January rise in world petroleum prices.

In January this year, Tajikistan also decreased the import of ready-made food products (8.5-percent decrease) and products of plant origin (8.8-percent decrease).

The Import of chemical products (pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, detergents) decreased more significantly last month – by 16.8 percent.

According to data from the Antimonopoly Agency, Tajikistan imports nine items of the socially significant goods and products, prices for which are subject to state regulation.

Experts say reduction in the volume of the essential goods and products in the market inevitably leads to an increase in prices for them.

The decline in the import of these goods and products reportedly results increasing prices for them in producing countries.
