As of July 1, 2023, debts of Tajikistan’s enterprises and organizations have totaled about 93 billion somonis (equivalent to more than 8.5 billion US dollars), which is 40 percent more compared to the same date last year, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.

The loss-making enterprises reportedly accounted for 22.5 percent of the total number of the reporting entities.

These are mainly enterprises operating in the mining industry (17 percent from the total number of loss-making enterprises), construction sector (11.8 percent), transportation and communications (3.0 percent).

Total balance loss reported over the first quarter (January-March) of this year has amounted to 927 million somonis (equivalent to 85 million US dollars).

In February this year, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) named the most unprofitable among the large state-owned enterprises.  Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC) Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national power utility company) tops the list of the most loss-making enterprises – more than 32 billion somonis.  It is followed by Tajik Air (Tajikistan’s national air carrier) – 40 million US dollars.

OJSC Aluminsokhtmon, which is owned by Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO), is also listed among the most unprofitable enterprises of Tajikistan.  Information on the debts of this company is not available in open sources.

OJSC NBO Roghun with its debt that exceeded 1 billion somonis back in 2020 is also designated as one of the most unprofitable enterprises in the country.  It was not possible to find out how much the volume of the company’s debt has changed over the past two years.

In early 2019, the Government instructed a MoF jointly with other relevant agencies to take immediate measures to reduce debts of large enterprises.  It was noted at the time that there are 21 such enterprises in the country.

According to official statistical data, about 800 enterprises wholly or partially owned by a government have been registered in the country.

The largest of them are OJSC TALCO (100%), OJSC NBO Roghun (95%), OJSC Tajiktelecom (95%), Barqi Tojik (100%), OJSC Tajiktransgas (100%), OJSC Dushanbe International Airport (100%), and OJSC Tajik Air (100%).
