A signing ceremony of the Record of Discussion between the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan was held on August 4, 2023 in Dushanbe.

Under the above agreement, the Government of the Republic of Korea is to allocate through KOICA the grant funds equivalent to 14 million US dollars for Power Supply Project Phase – 2 to be implemented in 2023 – 2026. The Project aims to contribute to power inequity reduction and livelihood improvement of local communities in Romit jamoat of Vahdat city by a construction of state-of-art electrical grid comprising of new power transformers, 110/35/10kV switchgears, 35kV-10kV double circuit overhead transmission lines and 0.4/0.22kV distribution networks. Moreover, to have sustainable operation and proper maintenance of the constructed facilities, the on-site capacity building of Tajik power grid management and engineering staff by Korean experts, as well as a training course in Korea for Tajik counterparts of KOICA is envisaged. As a result, over 4600 people from 14 Romit villages would get a reliable access to a power supply for the first time ever.

Mr. KWON Dongseok, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Tajikistan, said the following during the ceremony: “It should be noted that the newly proposed Project is built on the previous KOICA’s supported 6 million USD intervention successfully completed in 2021 which allowed inhabitants of other 9 villages of Romit be connected to a stable electricity. Hence, today’s signature is another evidence of willingness of Korean Government to support Tajikistan in ensuring the country’s goal toward achieving energy security. And we do hope to further expand our friendship and cooperation with Tajikistan in such sectors as agriculture, education, transport, energy and industry in the following years”.

Mr. JEONG Minyoung, KOICA Tajikistan Country Director added: “KOICA HQ and experts  

group evaluated that Phase 1 of the Project brought a positive socio-economic impact to rural communities of Vahdat. During the implementation of 2nd Phase the comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation management procedures would be applied, thus allowing us to even more enhance a local economy in the target area”.
