Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, who is currently in New York to participate in Central Asia — US leaders’ summit and the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, yesterday met with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The Tajik president’s official website says the parties discussed UN-Tajikistan cooperation including SDG implementation, climate change and water issues.

They, in particular, discussed climate change’s consequences for water resources, disaster prevention issues, development of green energy generation capacities, and adoption of the UN resolution on Tajikistan’s fifth initiative regarding preservation of glaciers.

Tajik leader reportedly emphasized that Tajikistan attaches significant importance to expansion of cooperation with the United Nations and considers this organization one of its key partners in the international arena.  

Rahmon and Guterres also discussed a number international and regional issues being of mutual interest, including regional security in Central Asia and the situation in Afghanistan.

Tajik President arrived in New York yesterday on a working visit.  The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Assistant to the President for Foreign Relations, the Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population and some other officials are accompanying Rahmon on this visit.
