Tajik, Iranian presidents discuss further expansion of cooperation, topical regional and international issues

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi have held talks to discuss the expansion of trade and economic cooperation.  

The talks were held in New York on the margins of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly 

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the two presidents discussed further expansion of the bilateral cooperation and a number of topical and regional issues being of mutual interest.

Rahmon and Raisi reportedly “expressed satisfaction with constructive political dialogue and found it necessary to continue the successful relationships, first of all in the fields of trade, energy, transportation and transit, tourism, air services and mutual simplification of visa formalities for citizens.” 

It was reportedly emphasized that “practical implementation of the program of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries for period up to 20230 and continuation of effective activity of pf the joint intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation will be of particular importance for the implementation of goals.” 

The parties also discussed cooperation between the two countries within international and regional organizations.   

Besides, Rahmon and Raisi exchanged views “on a tendency of increasing modern challenges and threats such as terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, transnational organized crime and cybercrime, which create serious problems for the security of the countries.”

It was emphasized that Tajikistan and Iran, as the closest neighbors, are interested in restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan.  

IRNA reports that the two presidents stressed that holding intergovernmental committees to combat terrorism, ensure tranquility in Afghanistan, and prevent foreigners’ interference is an important measure to bring about sustainable security in the region.

About Tehran-Dushanbe ties, they reportedly said that making use of economic committees' capacities can help the two countries share potentials and capabilities in order to expand cooperation.
