Tajik farmers have produced more than 790,000 tons of potatoes over the first ten months of this year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

An official source at a MoA says that over the reporting period average potato yields were 2.4 tons/ha.

The MoA specialists predict that dehqon (peasant) farms and public farms alone will produce a total of more than 900,000 tons of potatoes this year,

According to the MoA Crop Production Directorate, Tajik farmers this year have planted potatoes on an area of more than 33,500 hectares.

“If you add to this potatoes grown by the population on their own plots, the potato production will amount to more than 1 million tons this year,” says the MoA specialists.

Besides, 168,000 tons of potatoes are reportedly stored in warehouses.  In addition to this, 1,266 tons of potatoes that will be used in early spring are stored in refrigerated rooms

Potato is a widely grown crop in Tajikistan, most likely cultivated primarily at higher altitudes than areas dedicated to other principal crops, especially wheat and cotton.

Tajikistan intends to increase annual production of potatoes to 1.5 million tons.
