In 2023, 21,500 Tajik entrepreneurs shut down their businesses, Sulton Rahimzoda, the head of the State Committee on Investment and State-owned Property Management (GosKomInvest), told reporters in Dushanbe on February 13.

“20,500 of them are sole proprietors and 982 are legal entities,” Rahimzoda said.

GosKomInvest head further said that some of those entrepreneurs closed their businesses for not being in operation, while others transferred from one sphere of activity to another.

“At the same time, 33,100 new entrepreneurs were registered in the country last year,” he noted, adding that it is “a good process” compared to the number of closed businesses.

Recall the then head of GosKomInvest Saadi Qodirzoda said last year that 28,300 Tajik entrepreneurs terminated their operations and about 1000 enterprises were shut down in Tajikistan in 2022.

Mr. Qodirzoda noted at the time that “many entrepreneurs who are not well aware the legislation and financial aspects go bankrupt before their companies start operating”

The authorities claim they give special attention to development of investment and entrepreneurship in the country.

Entrepreneurs, however, talk about numerous problems that hinder development of business in the country.  Among them are high tax rates and unreasonable inspections carried out by supervisory bodies that leads to the cessation of their business activities.
