Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on June 11 met here with Mrs. Armida Salsia Alishahbana, the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) on the sidelines of the 3rd Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference.

According to the Tajik president’s official website site, Emomali Rahmon expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation with the United Nations and all its institutions.

The support of the Economic and Social Commission of the Organization in the direction of access to sustainable energy, agricultural development and creation of new jobs was reportedly considered necessary.

Emomali Rahmon deemed the role of the Commission in the implementation of the Medium-Term Development Program of Tajikistan for 2021-2025 significant.

In this context, within the framework of the Economic and Social Commission, it was considered important to strengthen the legal framework of multi-dimensional transportation, develop its infrastructure and establish regional logistics centers.

Introduction of digital technologies, intelligent transport system and climate change were other topics of the meeting.

During the meeting, the parties also exchanged views on a number of other issues being of mutual of interest.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region.  The Commission promotes cooperation among its 53 member States and 9 associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges.  ESCAP is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations.  The ESCAP secretariat supports inclusive, resilient and sustainable development in the region by generating action-oriented knowledge, and by providing technical assistance and capacity-building services in support of national development objectives, regional agreements and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  ESCAP also provides support to partners at the national level.  ESCAP’s national offer is rooted in and linked with the implementation of global and regional intergovernmental frameworks, agreements, and other instruments.
