An extended meeting of the Board of the Ministry of transport took place on July 12 to review the work carried out over the first six months of this year and disc tasks for the third quarter of this year.

The press center of the Ministry of Transport (MoT) says one of the issues discussed at the meeting was delay in payments for railway services and nonpayment by some ministries and agencies of their debts for railway services provided to them.

The ministry, however, does not name the debtors.

At the same time, it notes that despite financial difficulties, Tajik Railways (state-run railway company) has successfully completed the target to pay taxes to the country’s budget (the amount is also not mentioned) and provided significant financial support to the population for tens of thousands somonis.

Particular attention was reportedly paid to collaboration between the railway companies in order to increase the volume of export goods and support domestic entrepreneurs.

The MoT press center also reports that Tajik Railways has carried out major and basic repairs of dozens of carriages and railways.

At the same time, it notes that many locomotives, freight and passenger cars already need to be replaced due to the expiration of their service life.

The ministry reportedly calls the design of 573 kilometers of highways and 71 kilometers of railways an important area of work as part of a phased complete rehabilitation and repair of roads.

It is to be noted that rail transport in Tajikistan is limited, as the railroad system totals only 938.9 kilometers of non-electrified, single-track railway, including 650.9 kilometers of main railroads, 218 kilometers of station tracks, and 67.2 kilometers of access railway tracks.  The operational length of the country’s railway track is 597.7 kilometers.
