Prices for many basic food products have gone up this year so far

According to data from the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, the majority of agricultural products in Tajikistan rose in price last month.  In September, prices reportedly increased for meat and dairy products, eggs, herbs, onions, and tomatoes.  At the same time, market prices have decreased for grapes, lemons, some fruits, cabbage, and carrots.

Over the first nine months of this year, the biggest price increases have reportedly been seen in beef –up 19.7%, ground meat — up 19.3%, lamb — up 12.9%, fish — up 2.9%, sunflower oil — up 5.9%, cottonseed oil — up 3.6%, milk and dairy products — up 8.3%, tobacco products — up 4.8%, and alcohol — up 4.4%.

Meanwhile, average prices for vegetables over the same nine-month period have dropped by 2.4%, sugar by 4.4%, and fruits by 5.8%.

The Ministry of Agriculture reports that in January-September this year, gross agricultural product from all categories of farms has been 52.2 billion somonis (in current prices) and increased by 11.4 percent compared to the same period last year, including crop growing products — 39.1 billion somonis (11.9-percent increase).

 

Top 5 agricultural products with price increases

Fish – 2,908 tons produced in January-September this year, 4.6-percent increase compared to the same period last year; average price per kg — 25.00 to 70.00 somonis (increase of 2%–4%).

Eggs – 891.3 million units, 3.2-percent increase; average price per egg – 1.20 somonis (increase of 6.2%).

Meat – 213,600 tons, 5.6-percent increase; average prices: beef – 92.00 somonis (up 3.1%), lamb – 90.00 somonis (up 2.1%), chicken – 33.00 somonis (up 0.7%).

Milk – 723,300 tons (5-percent increase; average price: 7.00 somonis per liter (up 3.4%).

Vegetables – 2.669 million tons (8.9-percent increase; average prices: greens – 1.50 somonis per bunch (up 21%), onions – 2.50 somonis per kilogram (up 7.3%), tomatoes – 5.00 somonis (up 5.1%).

 

Top 5 agricultural products with price decreases

Grapes – 196,300 tons produced over the first nine months of this year, 32.6-percent ncrease compared to the same period last year; average price: 10.00 somonis per kg (down 14.7%).

Fruits – 614,800 tons, 20.1-percent increase; average prices: apples – 8.00 somoni per kg (down 3%), pears – 14 somonis per kg (down 4.9%).

Lemons – although there is no production data for this year, Tajikistan produces about 7,000 tons of lemons annually; average price: 15.00–20.00 somonis per kg (down 3.5%–4%).

Cabbages and carrots – no precise production data available, but on average, Tajikistan produces around 50,000 tons of cabbages and 500,000 tons of carrots per year; average price: 2.00 somonis per kg (down 3.1%).

Potatoes – 937,400 tons, 16.5-percent increase; average price: 4.00 somonis per kg (down 0.3–0.5%).
