According to information from press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), on one of sections of the construction work, bulldozer operators fell into the river.  Rescue team sent to the site rescued all the eight bulldozer operators, according to the source.  At present they are in good condition, the Asia-Plus interlocutor said.

, Said Kholmatov, has been arrested on suspicion of having taken bribery.

According to information from the Khatlon organized crime prevention directorate, he was detained red-handed on January 20 when he was taking bribe of 50 Somonis from a student of this faculty.  

“The student gave the bribe for passing an examination,” the source said, adding that criminal proceedings were instituted against Kholmatov under charge of bribery.

Cultural meeting entitled “Tajikistan: Culture and Traditions of the People” held in Moscow last week

DUSHANBE, January 23, Asia-Plus  — A cultural meeting entitled “Tajikistan: Culture and Traditions of the People” was held in the assembly hall of the “Oriental Culture” Museum in Moscow at the end of last week, Asia-Plus has learned from Muhammad Egamzod, press secretary of the Tajik Embassy in Moscow.

Tajik border troops report large drug haul at Tajik-Afghan border

DUSHANBE, January 23, Asia-Plus — A joint operation carried out by the Interior Ministry’s department for combating drug trafficking (drug police) and the Tajik border troops in the area of the Frontier Post  “Mehrobod” in Farkhor District (Khatlon) on the night of January 21-22 led to the arrest of Afghan drug trafficker Saidgul valadi Bismilloh at the Tajik-Afghan border, according to information from the State Committee for Protection of National Border of Tajikistan.

More than 60 kilograms of drugs, including more than 40 kilograms of heroin, more than 2 kilograms of raw opium and a sack of cannabis were confiscated from him, according to the source in the Tajik border service.   

Inspections by Khatlon prosecutors reveal US$200,000 worth of damage caused to region’s economy in 2005

QURGHON TEPPA, January 23, Asia-Plus — Khatlon Prosecutor, Foziljon Okhunov, speaking to journalists noted that inspections carried out by local prosecutors last year revealed some US$200,000 (654,037 Somonis) worth of damage caused to the region’s economy.  

According to him, criminal proceedings were instituted under 51 charges and 37 cases already moved to courts.  He also added that preliminary investigations had helped refund damages of 64,554 Somonis and cases for refunding damages of a total of 87,383 Somonis had moved to courts.  The trials helped refund 76,514 Somonis.  

285 people in Khatlon face charges of corruption

QURGHON TEPPA, January 23, Asia-Plus  In 2005, 267 criminal proceedings were instituted against 285 people under charge of corruption in Khatlon Province, Khatlon Prosecutor, Foziljon Okhunov, announced at apr?s conference in Qurghon Teppa on January 20.  

According to him, 141 cases, including 86 cases under charge of embezzlement and 42 cases under charges of abuse of office and misappropriation of funds provided in form of loans, and 13 cases under charges of bribery and extortion, already moved to courts.  

Okhunov also noted that 23 criminal proceedings were instituted against officials with education sector, 17 against medical workers and 7 criminal proceedings were instituted against officers of the power-wielding structures.   “Through the department for combating corruption alone, 29 criminal proceedings were instituted against 35 local officials,” said the Khatlon prosecutor, “Of these proceedings, 14 were instituted under charge of bribery.”

Ministry o labor pays attention to protection of vulnerable sections of population, says labor minister

DUSHANBE, January 23, Asia-Plus — To date, there are more than 500,000 pensioners in Tajikistan and an average monthly pension in the republic amounts to 26 Somonis, which is 10 Somonis more compared to 2004, Zokir Vazirov, Minister of Labor and Social Security, remarked at a news conference in Dushanbe on January 20.    

According to him, for the purpose of strengthening the level of population’s social security the minimum wages, public sector wage, allowances to poor families and pensions were increased last year.   “To date, an average pension of the invalids of the Great Patriotic War amounts to 129 Somonis, an average pension of the veterans of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 amounts to 116 Somonis and an average pension of the spouses of the servicemen who died in that war amounts to 82 Somonis,” said Vazirov, “More than 8 million Somonis were paid last year to some 500,000 poor families in the republic in compensation for payment electricity and more than 7 million Somonis were paid in compensation for payment for gas supplies.”

44,000 jobless officially registered in Tajikistan: ministry of labor and social security

DUSHANBE, January 23, Asia-Plus — To date, 2.044 able-bodied population have been officially reported in Tajikistan, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Zokir Vazirov, told journalists in Dushanbe on January 20.  

According to him, there are more than one million vacancies in the republic but people cannot get jobs because of low professional skills.  “For example, the Dushanbe water supply system Vodokanal (DVK) offers some 800 vacancies with good wages but so far, they have managed to found only two specialists,” the minister said.  

According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, employment centers throughout the republic last year registered more than 80,000 job seeking people.  “Of them, 22,000 were placed in jobs,” Zokirov said, noting that to date, 44,000 jobless receiving unemployment benefits have officially been reported in Tajikistan.  

He also noted that they had reached agreements on placing our citizens in jobs with Mongolia, a number of Arab states, the CIS states and other countries.  “But we cannot offer specialists they need,” Vazirov stressed.  

“On implementation of joint projects with the Russian Federation, some 50,000 our fellow-countrymen will be able to get jobs inside the republic and have good wages,” the minister said.   

Prime minister urges to adjust heating supply system in Qurghon Teppa before 2008

QURGHON TEPPA, January 23, Asia-Plus — Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov attended a meeting of Khatlon Hukumat that was held in Qurghon Teppa on January 19.  The meeting was held to sum up the region’s economic results in 2005.  The meeting also focused on resumption of activity of heating supply system in Qurghon Teppa, capital of Khatlon Province.  

The prime minister demanded at the meeting that the problem of providing the city population with heating should be solved before 2008. 

Qurghon Teppa Mayor Nasrulloyev, for his part, noted that program on the Qurghon Teppa heating supply system was currently being worked out.  Under this program it is supposed to introduce an individual system of supply of the city with heating (installation of separate boiler-house for each residential building), according to the mayor.  

The Khatlon governor Amirsho Miraliyev telling the meeting harshly criticized work of the regional trade unions.  He, in particular, noted that the local trade unions were not cooperating with local authorities on the issues of paying wages to employees.  Miraliyev also expressed dissatisfaction with work of the regional post office.  He also called activities of “Tojik Telecom” in the region unsatisfactory, noting that the “Tajik Telecom” branches in Khatlon do not pay the retail trading tax.  

Speaking on the state of the industrial sector in the region, Miraliyev dwelled on activity of the Qurghon Teppa transformer-producing plant. “Since the plant was transferred from jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Energy, it has been working at a loss,” said the Khatlon governor, “The Ministry of Energy is not developing the plant and it even has not yet paid its debts to the plant.”

In this connection, Oqilov ordered the Ministry of Energy to take urgent measures to develop the plant’s activity as well as consider and submit suggestions on the completion of the construction of the second line of the plant, which has stood idle over the last 15 years.
