DUSHANBE, April 16, 2014, Asia-Plus – Dushanbe has provided humanitarian aid to disaster-affected people in Khatlon province.

“A convoy of 14 heavy trucks carrying 160 tons of humanitarian aid departed to Khatlon province from Dushanbe today,” Shavkat Saidov, a spokesman for the Dushanbe mayor’s office, told Asia-Plus in an interview Wednesday afternoon.

According to him, the assistance, including buildings materials and food products, is intended for disaster-affected people in the districts of Shouroobod, Vose and Hamadoni.  “50 percent of the assistance will be distributed among residents of the worst-affected areas in the Shouroobod district,” Saidov said.

A decision on providing humanitarian aid to the disaster-affected people in Khatlon province was made at an April 14 meeting of the Dushanbe mayor’s office.

The Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of Tajikistan (CES) has also sent humanitarian aid to the disaster-affected residents of the Vose district.

The CES press center says the assistance included 60 tents, 300 kilograms of wheat flour, 150 kilograms of sugar, 150 kilograms of rice, 90 kilograms of macaroni, ad 60 liters of vegetable oil.  Besides, 11,000 liters of diesel fuel has been sent to Vose for mitigation of the disaster effects.

We will recall that torrential rain on April 12-13 caused a series of landslides and floods that damaged residential buildings in several villages in Khatlon’s districts of Shouroobod, Vose, Kulob and Hamadoni.  15 people were killed and dozens of residential buildings were destroyed.
