DUSHANBE, June 10, 2014, Asia-Plus – The chairman of the opposition Islamic Revival Party (IRP), Muhiddin Kabiri, was pelted with tomatoes and eggs on a visit to the city of Kulob.
Mahmoudjon Fayzrahmonov, a spokesman for the IRP, says that unknown persons assaulted Kabiri in Kulob after he had arrived to meet with locals on June 10.
“The incident took place after the meeting that Kabiri held in the house of Mahmadsharif Nabiyev, the head of the IRP’s organization for Kulob, because local tax authorities closed the IRP’s office in Kulob on June 9,” Fayzrahmonov said.
According to him, the incident took place after the meeting on the street and “there were no participants of the meeting among the assaulters.”
More than 150 local youths reportedly participated n the meeting with IRP leader.
“Some 15 men and women pelted Muhiddin Kabiri tomatoes and eggs, accusing the party members of wakening the civil war in the 1900s and seeking to destabilize the country today,” the IRP spokesman said, noting that Kabiri and other party members could not leave the scene of the incident because the road was blocked by cars with the following number plates: 63 66; 43 44; and 33 22.
IRP released a statement on June 10 noting that it cannot be ruled out that the assault was organized by officers from the State Committee for National Security (SCNS)’s office in Kulob.
