DUSHANBE, July 21, 2015, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan is seeking help from donor countries to mitigate effects of recent natural disasters.
Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda yesterday met here with representatives of diplomatic missions, donor countries and international organizations active in the country.
A statement released by the government says the prime minister acquainted them with causes and effects of natural disasters that hit the country recently.
The prime minister reportedly said that damage caused by natural disasters is estimated at more than 50 million U.S. dollars.
Mudslides and floods that have affected the districts of Shugnan, Rushan, Vanj and Darvoz in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), the districts of Kuhistoni Mastchoh, Ayni and Panjakent in Sughd province, the districts of Panj, Hamadoni, Bokhtar and Jilikul in Khatlon province as well as districts in the Rasht Valley (eastern Tajikistan) in recent days destroyed dozens of residential buildings, roads, bridges, power transmission lines and many social facilities.
Rasoulzoda reportedly called on the meeting participants to help Tajikistan mitigate effects of natural disasters.
For their part, diplomatic missions, donor countries and international organizations active in the country expressed readiness to participate in the process of mitigation of effects of natural disasters in Tajikistan, the statement says.
We will recall that mudslides and floods caused by rains and melting glaciers destroyed almost 60 houses, trade and cultural facilities, electricity lines, and an irrigation system in the Shugnan district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region over the last few days. The families whose houses were destroyed were moved to a safer area and settled in a temporary tent camp.
The damage caused by the mudslides and floods to the villages of Barsem, Berdibekobod and Kolkhozobod in the Shugnan district is reportedly estimated at 20 million somoni.
