DUSHANBE, October 27, 2015, Asia-Plus – Buildings of Khorog State University and Khorog’s central post office have been damaged by Monday’s earthquake.
“According to the latest data, 12 residential buildings have been damaged in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) by yesterday’s earthquake,” Ms. Niloufar Aslamshoyeva a spokeswoman for the GBAO regional administration, told Asia-Plus Tuesday afternoon.
Seven residential buildings have been damaged in the Ishkashim district and five residential buildings have been damaged in the Roshtqala district, Aslamshoyeva said, noting that no injured were reported.
She further added that two special commissions had been set up to assess actual damage caused to Ishkashim and Roshtqala by the October 26 tremor.
“In Khorog, buildings of Khorog State University and central post office have been partially damaged,” the spokeswoman said.
According to her, the GABO regional administration has provided food assistance to the tremor-affected families in Ishkashim and Roshtqala.
We will recall that there were reports of injuries in a stampede at Khorog State University, as a building was evacuated.
Monday”s magnitude-7.5 earthquake was centered in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, 76 kilometers south of Faizabad, the capital of Afghan Badakhshan Province, and 350 kilometers southeast of Dushanbe.
More than 30 people were reported killed in Afghanistan, while more than 130 were reported dead in neighboring Pakistan. Casualties are expected to rise as rescuers, in some cases hampered by mudslides following recent heavy rains in the region, reach remote areas.
